ABS Black Lace Brocade - To keep or not to keep


I just bought a black lace brocade ABS dress from Hautelook and it just came in the mail. Size 6 is apparently WAY TOO BIG for me. I really don't know what to do, I can get it altered, of course. But for my purposes (to wear to my engagement dinner), would this be too dark and not auspicious enough? What do you think?

    IT'S all my mom's fault!!!!! she kept saying "ARE YOU SURE???" when I said I should get size 4...>_<~~~ she thinks I'm fattttt.....
